Hmmm.... It's actually quite convenient for those of us outsiders to ignore 40-odd years of German division. (I had a Lab-partner in '03-'04 who's parents fled E.Germany to the (comparative) freedom of Poland.) I don't know your personal history. Are you an "Ossi", by any chance?
