"Sanctuary for those who despaired"? Oh, come on. I liked my army theory a lot better. At least that gave us a good reason for being here. I mean, what, we're supposed to be happy because we can't remember bad things that happened? I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way, especially when we can't remember any good things happening, either. I know ( Read more... )

Well, if you want to build a really good army, you're going to want people who already know how to fight, right? But most people who fight for a living have something they're fighting for and they're not going to be happy about being taken from that. And it's exactly that kind of loyalty that's desirable in an army.

But if you take all these prospective soldiers with prior commitments and remove their memories of all those prior commitments--all of them, right down to their family and homes--and put them in an entirely new context with entirely new people, you force them to rebuild their lives there. And, with enough time, new loyalties are created to this new home and these new friends, so then when the time comes that you actually need your army, your recruitment pool has suddenly become a lot more cooperative.

I find building an army a lot more believable than mindwiping us to ease our suffering.

Quite the proposal that is. The main issue I see with such a theory is the question of why the powers that be would bother to give back memories in the first place. If you want to force them to rebuild lives and loyalties, periodically giving reminders about their former home seems rather... detrimental.

Well, obviously, that wasn't part of the original plan. Something went wrong somewhere. It just wouldn't be good plot if a plan like that went off without a hitch.

Don't feel bad. It's still a good theory- this journal thing could be a lie to throw us off.

That's a definite possibility. It doesn't seem right that this is some twisted work of charity.

You don't think the note's real, then?

It might be, it might not be. I'm not entirely sold on it, but it could be true. Even if it is true, it's hardly a complete history of Memento Eden.

It may not be complete, but it's the best we've seen so far.

Considering that what we've seen so far is apparently nothing, that's not exactly much of a bragging point.
