[series]: Fantastic Four (Movieverse)
[character]: Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch
[character history / background]: When Johnny and Sue were young, their parents passed, leaving Sue alone to raise him (despite their closeness in age.) Both brilliant, they together achieved higher education, but where Sue pursued degrees in science Johnny turned to mechanics. He found a job in NASA as a pilot (under Ben Grimm), but was kicked out later after bringing two girlfriends into and crashing one of NASA's flight simulators. Without learning any sort of lesson from the ordeal (continuing to waltz through life as an irresponsible playboy), Johnny went on to work for Victor Von Doom's company as their pilot on retainer.

At the start of the first movie, Johnny grapples with the fact that his sister's old flame - one who broke her heart - is wheedling back into her life just after she has started a relationship with Victor Von Doom. Since he thinks Victor will ultimately be better for her/make her happier (having financial stability, and not being as much a failure at relationships as Reed), he immediately starts pressuring Richard and Ben to back off before Sue gets hurt again. Reed is clueless about it, and Ben insists that the relationship is only up to the two of them, so they head off to preform Reed's experiment in space.

While in space, a radioactive cloud that they had been sent to observe speeds up for no reason they can understand, and sweeps through the spaceship. Through this occurrence, Johnny develops his powers - they first manifest in his body temperature in the hospital after their return from space (a thermometer reads him at a cool 207 degrees), and escalate when he self-immolates during a snowboarding adventure. When his sister, Reed and Ben all discover their respective powers, they stumble upon a disastrous car crash on a highway bridge and rush to the rescue, exposing themselves to the public almost immediately after mutation. Where his teammates (thus dubbed by the news as the "Fantastic Four") are all mortified, Johnny thrives off the attention and is crushed when they demand he stay inside until they can reverse the affects of the radiation.

Defying the orders just a week or two into the self-imposed quarantine, Johnny attends a BMX bike rally and attempts to fly with his powers on national television (succeeding only for a few seconds before crashing to the ground.) The tensions that had been building between everyone from being stuck in such close quarters veritably explode, and Victor - also affected by the radiation cloud unbeknownst to the Fantastic Four - begins to manipulate them while plotting their downfall.

Turning Ben back to his former self (and therefore taking out all the brute force from the team) after inciting conflict between him and Reed, Victor then shoots a heat-seeking missile at Johnny, who masters his flying ability after jumping off of the high-rise to divert it from hitting his sister. He flies it over the harbor and eventually successfully detonates it without harming himself, by throwing fire at a refuse barge. He returns in time to join in the final battle with Victor, using his ability to heat up like the sun and melt him down before Reed rapidly cools him with a fire hydrant.

Lauded as heroes to the public, the Fantastic Four finish the movie by throwing a celebration for themselves, where the team was shown to have put aside their differences and join together again (Johnny doesn't even protest to Reed's proposal to his sister!), continuing on to fight crime and do other costume-clad super-hero type stuff during the time lapse between the movie and its sequel. Johnny will be taken from somewhere around there.
[character abilities]: After being affected by cosmic radiation, Johnny developed the ability to create and - to some extent - control fire (pyrogenesis and limited pyrokinesis.) He can propel himself to fly after covering himself in flames, in excess of the speed of sound. He can also control the temperature of the flames he surrounds himself with, becoming as hot as the sun itself, or cool enough to touch people without harming them. Generally while in flight he's running hot enough to incinerate projectiles flying towards him, including bullets. He was shown to fly halfway around the world without getting tired, and can make a mean batch of jiffy-pop off the palm of his hand.

Despite the fact that he spends all of his time chasing girls and money, Johnny is rather brilliant. Formerly a pilot for NASA, he was on retainer for Victor Von Doom's ginormous company after losing that particular gig over sexy shenanigans. He's also really into Motocross free-styling (having made a name for himself on the scene even before getting his powers), snowboarding, sex, and has a surprisingly good mind for finances.
[character personality]: His official military profile lists him as "confident, reckless, irresponsible, self-obsessed, and bordering on narcissistic." He freely admits that it's all true. Johnny can be best described as playboy with a knack for making money and bedding women and is (to quote the man himself) not very deep.

Despite the seemingly vapid shallowness he projects (loud and clearly) on the surface, he is phenomenally intelligent and, in fact, has become so accustomed to coasting through life without any (or at least very little) semblance of real, honest-to-god effort that he has developed an entirely playful attitude towards the world. It takes a lot for him to face a problem with any semblance of seriousness, and even then he tends to crack wise rather than admit that he can't do anything to fix a situation he's gotten himself into. Because he's not at all used to losing, when he messes up or things don't go his way, he is incredibly motivated to turn the situation around and take back the win... if for no other reason than he doesn't like losing.

He is great with women. He's laid-back, incredibly self-assured and always looking for a good time. He was even willing to throw away a career at NASA for a night of fun, which attests to his lack of projection towards the future. He doesn't set goals, he lives in the moment; this makes him incredibly impulsive, a trait that has gotten his team into trouble more times than he can probably count. He's also brash and obnoxious - ever the Annoying Kid Brother - known to play pranks on or insult members of his team when they're most down and need the distraction.

Growing up as he did left Johnny hungry for attention. Where Sue seeks love and devotion from only one person - her high school sweetheart - Johnny seeks it from everyone. He does everything he can to thrust himself into the public eye - when he first gained his powers, he sought out interviews and endorsements and made public appearances while his teammates tried to hide away at home - and seems to shine most when the pressure from the public is on full force. He makes jokes and engages strangers to satiate his need to be liked, even acts nobly (though also for his own sense of morality, perhaps to a lesser extent) for the adoration and admiration of people he doesn't even know. When his sister told him that "they [the public] don't really like you, Johnny, you're just a fad to them" he stomped out of the room shouting back "they love me!"
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: After the first movie, before the second.

[journal post]: Alright, so I've got it all figured out- City, curses, dead people, no escape, etc.

NOW! Onto more important things. Nightclubs, where? And what does it take to get on the news around here? ... There is a news, right? I wouldn't want to deprive any of you the fantastic sight of my handsome self. Gotta make new fans friends somehow, after all.

Relatedly, ladies- how many of you are up for some dancing tonight? There's always plenty of Johnny to go around.
[third person / log sample]: Johnny's broken leg was really putting a damper on his week. It was cramping his style. It was driving him crazy.

It was also really itchy.

Johnny stared long and hard at the big white cast that ran from his toes all the way up to just above his knee. He wondered if he could get an endorsement for it - paint a big Ford ad across the front or something - but there was always the issue of having to then pass up a prime opportunity to have attractive women use it to sign their names and numbers. This was looking to be a really tough choice.

After two attempts at getting up by himself (despite the fact that, of course, everyone had told him not to), Johnny hit the call button by his bedside to summon a nurse and readied his most winning smile. Maybe seeing a pretty face would help him decide, and since he couldn't go to them...

The hospital room he had been confined to was stuffed to the brim with cards, and in lieu of flowers, there were mountains of bras and panties (he loved his fans.) On the first two days when he strained to hear (or sweet-talked a nurse into opening the window for him), the yells of worried public filtered in. It was his fifth day lying on his back, though, and there wasn't anyone left - it was killing him slowly. On the inside.

He could really do with some attractive company, to take his mind off of matters - like how Sue and Reed were having a fight again (about the fact that their wedding had been postponed for the third time), and how Ben was never around because things were going so well with him and Alicia... which he totally wasn't jealous about, by the way. He wasn't a sit around on his ass kind of guy, and the inactivity wasn't doing him any favors not to mention he hadn't gotten laid for five days straight?

Attractive company and beer. He could really do with some attractive company and beer. What was taking the nurse so long, anyway? If she was cute he could probably talk her into a quickie, or at least some making out - he hit the call button a second time and resolved not to think any further on the subject of his teammates who were elsewhere while he was rotting away in a stiff bed like an invalid. He was Johnny Storm, damnit! The Human Torch! If he couldn't make the best out of this situation, then who the hell could?

He beamed as the doorknob rattled, but the expression fell away when the door opened. It was a male nurse. This had to be Sue's doing. Worst week ever!
