I feel a little foolish now that I never managed to get this far before. One of the suggestions for testing RAM in a multiple-stick setup is to try one at a time. I have 2 sticks, and 2 sockets. If you're using an external video capture box (USB) or a capture card that does hardware compression, 1GB should be fine. The only real memory hog would be transcoding, and even then it will work. It just might be a tad slower because it has to work in smaller chunks.

Are you going for HD or SD capture? I heard there was a Myth driver out there for the Hauppauge HD-PVR, which is your only real option for HD capture from a cable box, but that does h.264, which really needs a 2.5Ghz Core2Duo or better to decompress fast enough at playback. Mpeg2 or Divx/Xvid should be no problem.
