The cab to a semi is sitting in our parking lot. It's been there since I woke up today. That's not the least bit interesting in itself. What is slightly interesting is that it's been running this whole time. It's a bit aggravating too, since I can hear it from my apartment. I've considered going out there to shut it off, but what if it's ( Read more... )

I have been told by my truck driving uncles that it takes more diesel to start up a truck than to let it run. I myself don't buy how leaving a truck running for hours on end saves gas but that is what I have been told.

A diesel engine uses approximately one-fifth the fuel while idling that it does while running normally, so the fuel efficiency really is there.
(During normal operation, the air:fuel ratio is around 20:1 ~ 25:1; while idling that goes up to 80:1 ~ 100:1)
Further, just turning the engine off for 15-20 minutes and then having to restart it is much more difficult than starting the engine cold. It takes almost 3 times the engine RPMs, and is a much finnickier thing to get it to start properly. So for short periods of time (usually anything less than 2 hours or so), letting the engine idle is both good on fuel efficiency and much better than trying to restart the engine while still hot.

Of course I know who you are. You're Conrad. You know twothingsatonce, otherwise known as Maggie. That's how you found my journal, through hers.

It was out there running all night. Sounds to me like that's wasteful, which I had pretty much already assumed. Turns out the guy hit a car on his way out the next morning, there were signs up asking for information about it (license plate, description, etc).

Knowing I know Maggapotamus doens't mean you know who I am, it just means you know how I found your LJ. =D
