When is it best to give somebody bad news? Should you give it to them when they're having a good day, so the fact that other things are going well cushions the blow? I think that bad news matters a whole lot less on the timing, and a whole lot more on the tone and person of the one who delivers the bad news. One of the things that I know I saw a lot in my family was, "Hey, guess who just died." Which is about the worst way to deliver bad news. I think that if it's delivered with empathy and sincerity, that's what's important.
