When is it best to give somebody bad news? Should you give it to them when they're having a good day, so the fact that other things are going well cushions the blow? The downside is that it would pretty much ruin the good day. You could give it to them when they're already down about something, in the hopes that it can't get much worse, but what ( Read more... )

I think that bad news matters a whole lot less on the timing, and a whole lot more on the tone and person of the one who delivers the bad news. One of the things that I know I saw a lot in my family was, "Hey, guess who just died." Which is about the worst way to deliver bad news. I think that if it's delivered with empathy and sincerity, that's what's important.
