I've got a Janome HK green machine myself. I used it in a 11-week class on making clothing, and it did all the work just fine. I did decide to skip the 4-step buttonholes and had a friend do them on her machine, and I didn't do any basting stitches with mine, but everything's held up over moderate wear so far (apron, top & button-up bottom jammies, and a full-length bathrobe). I've also made a half-dozen t-shirt pillows, stuffed pretty thoroughly, and the stitches have held really well.

I definitely want a fancier machine for more involved projects, but this is a terrific starter machine.
