Hmmm....not sure where to stay. I've heard fun things about the Ace Hotel, you might look that up on google or something.
For fun quirky shops and stuff, you should spend at least an afternoon in Capital Hill. It's the artsy/gay predominated area and is great for window shopping and people watching. U District is kind of fun, too, as is Pioneer Square.
It's totally touristy, but I really enjoyed the Experience Music Project. It's an all-afternoon stop, though...but if you're into music history, it's cool. And right by the Space Needle. We went last Feb, and it was pretty chilly so not super crowded.
I used to go all the time, but I always stayed in the funky, funky ghetto (stayed in Jim's apartment at 22nd and Yesler, and once stayed at the YMCA when I was 10). Depending on how adventurous you're feeling, you could stay at the Green Tortoise hostel, which is right downtown. There are a bunch of hotels right there, a cluster in the U-District, and some just NE of downtown. Just don't stay in Rainier Beach and you're golden. I would recommend staying downtown if you can afford it just for the sake of being central. Check out the Klondike Gold Rush Museum which is actually a national park in Pioneer Square. I love that place, and they have a brochure that's a list of other historical-interest oriented museums that are weird and undervisited, like the police history museum. Right around the corner from there is the Waterfall Garden where I used to go and write for hours
