He hadn’t ever seen that boy before.
It wasn’t like Masuda was a regular in that café, but he came from time to time, usually Mondays and Thursdays, but when he managed it, he’d sometimes also come in his break on Wednesdays.
Like today.
It was Wednesday and Masuda had decided to have a cup of good tea and a slice of delicious cheese cake while reading his book.
The café was quiet, he’d never seen many people coming, so none of the waiters was unexceptionally busy, what kept the atmosphere calm. Classical music was playing quietly from the ceiling and Masuda had to admit, whoever made those cakes, that person was a Goddess and he would worship them for the rest of his life.
However, that day, a Wednesday, his attention was caught by that face. He didn’t even look over to Masuda once, but somehow he still managed to make him notice the boy.
Like all the waiters he wore a uniform. Black trousers, a white shirt and a black vest. He looked slim and probably a bit too thin, but not fragile and weak.
His hair was dark brunette, slightly permed and when he smiled, his face light up and even though Masuda knew waiters had to smile for their costumers, every smile that kid gave seemed so genuine and pure and just honest.
He immediately fell for it.
Masuda would have liked to hear his voice, find out his name, but the tables he was serving were way too far from his, so he had to be satisfied with watching the boy for that day.
“Would you like anything else?”
He looked up and smiled at the waiter standing next to him. “Thanks, I’m fine.”
The boy nodded his black haired head and left him alone again. Masuda remained watching the pretty boy secretly over the frame of his book, then he got his things together, when he had to leave for classes again.
The black-haired boy who was probably Masuda’s age, as well, gave him his bill. Masuda paid and before he left, he threw another last look at the boy with the brunette, curly hair being completely engulfed in laying up a table.
For a month, Masuda came back frequently. Sometimes, he was lucky and the boy was there; other days he wouldn’t see him. He never made it as far as to be served by him, though and Masuda started to wonder if he became insane, being so obsessed with a stranger.
One day, Masuda waited in front of the shop for a moment, trying to find out which tables the boy was serving, so he could choose one of those. But strangely, the boy didn’t seem to have fixed tables, he served just all of them - from one corner to the other.
Thursdays were good to come here; on Thursdays Masuda finished classes early, so he could spend as much time as he wanted.
He had just gripped the door knob to walk in, as someone took his shoulder.
“Taka-chan”, a quite familiar voice asked.
He turned and smiled. “Ah, Koyama-senpai.”
The older one with slight reddish hair beamed. “Are you often coming here?”
Masuda wanted to deny that, but just managed to say: “Ah, well…”, then Koyama had him interrupted.
“I heard this is quite a good place. Is the cake really that good?”
Helplessly, Masuda shrugged a shoulder. “It is. Who told you?”
Koyama just smiled and then opened the door. As he walked in, the waiters all welcomed the new guest and Masuda saw the black-haired boy from the day before coming over. “Keii, you really came!”
Koyama nodded with a gentle smile. “You said I should by all means, Shige.”
Nodding enthusiastically, the boy guided them over to a table. “Please, sit. What would you like to drink?”
They both ordered herb tea, and Shige hurried back, leaving them alone.
“So, you know one of the people working here”, Masuda noted.
The older boy nodded. “We’ve been friends for a long time and he’s working here to finance his studies at University, so I promised to come by a day.”
“That’s nice. He served me the other day and he’s doing well.”
“He’ll be happy to hear that.” Koyama leaned in a bit. “Shige’s a bit of a perfectionist, you know.”
“I’ve heard that, Keii!” The raven-haired came back and placed the cups on their table.
“But it’s the truth.”
Masuda didn’t listen to the rest they were saying. The seat he had taken was quite useless. If he wanted to see the pretty boy, he’d always have to scoop over his shoulder and that would be remarkable.
“Today’s speciality is handmade apple strudel and I can tell you Ryo succeeded himself just once again.”
Koyama tilted his head. “Ryo?”
“He’s our pastry chef; the one who’s making all the delicious stuff we sell”, Shige explained.
“Are they somehow training you guys on what to say?”
Shige laughed and shook his head. “No, but he’s really good.”
Masuda nodded and looked at Koyama. “He’s right.”
“Ah, I forgot!” Koyama hit his hand on the table. “Shige, that’s Masuda Takahisa, a junior of mine from University. Taka, that’s Kato Shigeaki, my best friend.”
Masuda nodded his head politely. “Nice to meet you.”
Shige smiled, as he bowed. “Thank you for always coming here.”
“Eeeh?” Koyama looked surprised. “So, you visit this place a lot, after all.”
“He’s coming regularly”, Shige confirmed.
“But you never really have it busy here, do you?” Koyama looked around the café. “I mean, you have time to stay here and talk with us.”
Shige pointed at the mostly empty corners behind them. “Those eight are my tables today. Everyone of us has about that many tables. If it gets too much we always have one guy floating.”
Koyama nodded. “Well, your organized then.” He smiled happily, as if he was proud of his friend, then he pointed at the counter at the other side of the shop. “I’ll take one of the recommendation.”
Masuda ordered the same, then he quickly checked back on his reason for coming again, saw him standing in a corner and watching the tables carefully. Apparently, he was the one Shige had mentioned as the guy floating.
“Are you looking for something?”
He quickly turned again and shook his head at Koyama. “No, I was just…”
The older one lifted an eyebrow and smiled cheekily. “Don’t tell me you are having a date.”
If he thought about it, he somehow had, Masuda thought. After all, he just came here for one reason today. “No, I just wanted to know how this is working.”
“Ah”, Koyama made and looked at other tables, watched the waiters. “The one Shige said is floating must be the small boy there, the thin one, you know.” He pointed at Masuda’s recent obsession and Masuda took it as an excuse to turn and look at him. “He doesn’t have much to do. Easy job.”
Masuda watched him for a while. It was true, he didn’t have much to do, since after all, he was there to help out. But no one actually needed him to help, since they were all doing fine. Shige was just serving their and one other table, the other tall, really well-build boy served three tables of his eight.
“I am sure that he’s working hard, though.”
Koyama smiled at Masuda’s back, as he heard those words. “Sure. He’s most likely having other duties, as well.”
Masuda nodded and saw the boy turning around a bit and for a moment, their eyes met. He was sure the world had stopped in that moment. They just looked at each other and then the pretty boy smiled at him, just in the way he had smiled the day before, as well.
But that time around it was just for Masuda, only for him. It made his heart flutter and he couldn’t bring himself to return it, instead, he turned back to Koyama quickly, trying to hide his embarrassment, as Shige brought their cakes and thanked him politely with a shy smile.
He didn’t notice the boy was still watching him; a pout on his pretty lips, though.
It was late, and actually, Masuda didn’t have time, but that boy just didn’t leave his head. He would always think of him and wonder what he could do to get to know him.
So, he went to the café on Friday, but the boy wasn’t there. He spent almost the whole evening in the café, sipping from his tea, pretending to read, ordering a slice of cake, but the boy didn’t show up.
He came back on Saturday, but again, the boy wasn’t there.
Still having hopes, Masuda came back on Sunday, but there was no use. He wasn’t working that day, either.
But that day, Shige was and he smiled, as he saw Masuda, welcoming him warmly.
“It’s nice to see you again”, he greeted Masuda friendly.
“Thank you, it’s nice to see you.” Masuda sat down at one of the tables and again, he spent the day preparing classes and making his homework in the café, but the boy didn’t show up, until Masuda left again.
When he came on Monday, he spotted him from the other side of the street already. Behind the huge glass window of the café, Masuda could see the boy serving a table and immediately his face lit up.
Finally, today he would make a move.
He walked in and took a seat next to the table the boy had just served. Right then, he was out of sight, probably in the kitchen and Masuda waited nervously for him to return. He figured it’d be best to behave as usual and looked for his book in his bag. When he had just opened it and looked for the right one, a gentle and friendly voice reached his ear.
“Welcome. What may I serve you?”
Slowly, Masuda looked up and met the sight of the boy he admired so much, the one he wanted to get to know so desperately, but facing that beautiful face, that lovely smile, all his courage left him. He couldn’t even manage to smile back.
“I… some tea?”
The boy nodded. “What kind of tea? We have…”
“I know. I mean…” Masuda tried to collect his thought. “I always have herb tea.”
With a smile, the brunette turned and left.
Masuda let go of his breath and palmed his face. He was completely useless, he lost all his nerves facing that boy. In a way, he just didn’t know how to act, how to get the boy interested in him, too.
He wasn’t anything special after all.
It just took a minute for the boy to come back and he placed the cup in front of Masuda, asking him what he would like to eat.
“Tegoshi!” A voice interrupted them and the boy turned to that. Shige stood at the door to the kitchen and waved him over.
So, his name was Tegoshi, Masuda thought and his eyes were fixed on that face.
The boy immediately checked his watch and lifted his head to look at Masuda again. “Have you decided yet? Otherwise my colleague is going to take your order.”
Masuda blinked at him and mumbled: “Cheesecake”, not really getting what was happening.
The boy nodded and wanted to leave again, but Masuda pulled all his courage together to speak up. “Eh…”
The boy turned and his look was questioning, but gentle. “Anything else?”
“Are you… leaving?”
Tegoshi tilted his head and smiled slightly. “I am having my break now.”
Nodding, Masuda didn’t know what to say further; he felt stupid and childish and he had to be so damn obvious. He looked up again and managed a smile.
The boy returned it, but somehow that one was different from the smiles Masuda had seen before. It was just as genuine and pure and honest, but in a way there was something else to it and he couldn’t figure what exactly.
“See you again”, Tegoshi said, “Massu.”
He didn’t go back again.
After Tegoshi had disappeared into the kitchen, Masuda had hurried to the counter, paying Shige the tea and the cake and had left as quickly as he could have.
From then on, he hadn’t gone to the café again and already a week had passed, since then.
He wondered how the boy could have known his name. No one actually called him Massu, but in a way, the boy had to know his name; it sounded like a nickname for Masuda.
He sat down on a bench in the park close to the university. From there, he could spot the café at the other side of the street, and sitting there in the weak spring sun under a tree that was not yet blooming, Masuda wondered if behind that huge window Tegoshi was working and smiling for the costumers.
It was a pity things had turned out like that.
Usually, on a Monday, as it was that day, Masuda would sit in the café already; reading one of his books and enjoy a cup of good herb tea and some delicious pastry.
He wondered why he had to exaggerate things and had wanted so much more. He should have been satisfied with that; instead his obsession for sweet things had taken him over completely.
Sweet things, he thought and looked at his the café. He didn’t know him at all, but a person with a smile like that, with a face and a voice as gentle and adorable as Tegoshi’s just had to be sweet.
Masuda sighed. It was a pity.
He looked up again and as he saw someone coming out of the café, he first didn’t pay much attention, then he recognized the rather familiar figure and he couldn’t look away.
He knew it was wrong, but he just wanted to see where Tegoshi would go. He wouldn’t follow; at least he tried to convince himself of that.
But there was no need, actually. Tegoshi crossed the street. He wore glasses and instead of the usual black and white uniform of the café, he wore jeans a short jacket. A thick shawl was warming his neck.
Masuda watched him, as he reached the other side of the street and his heartbeat rushed up when Tegoshi came into the direction of the park. He actually walked down the path the bench Masuda was sitting on was placed at.
He turned his head, watched his hands and hoped, Tegoshi wouldn’t notice him.
“Can I sit here?”
Masuda looked up and blinked at him.
He had passed five empty benches and just a few meters ahead were three more. But he asked to sit exactly there? Next to Masuda.
“Sure… Go ahead.”
Tegoshi smiled and sat down, leaving some space between them. He leaned back and buried his hands in his pockets, looking up at the sky.
“You didn’t come Thursday.”
Masuda turned his head to look at him. “I…”
“Usually, you’re at the café every Thursday. Every Thursday and every Monday. Sometimes, you’d come on Wednesdays, too.” Tegoshi looked down again, at his knees. “But this week you didn’t come after Monday.”
Frowning, Masuda tilted his head in question. “You know which days I preferably come to the café?”
Tegoshi nodded and gave Masuda a quick smile; a shy one. “I noticed you quite some time ago. You’d always sit there and read; ordering nothing but herb tea and whatever it is that’s the speciality of the day.”
“How…?”
“I served you a lot of times, actually. But you didn’t really notice who was serving you.”
“You served me before?”
“In the beginning; then you never happened to sit at one of my tables”, the boy answered and shrugged his shoulders. “You never paid attention, so I had no chance to make you notice me, when I happened to be on shift when you were there.”
Masuda could just blink in confusion. What exactly was that boy telling him?
A light wind came up and messed up Tegoshi’s hair slightly. “So, as I noticed you had your fixed days to come I made sure to take shifts for those. They are my fixed days now: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.”
“Because of me…? Why… I mean, what…?”
Tegoshi smiled at him and blushed a bit. “I don’t know. I thought you were an interesting person and I strangely wanted to know you.”
“How did you find out my name?” Masuda didn’t feel nervous at all anymore. Strangely, he felt much more curious now. The whole situation was so surreal to him.
“I pinned Shige to the wall with questions when I saw him talking to you and that friend of his. He told me your name.”
For a while, Masuda could just stare at him. “Recently, I’ve been there every day.”
Tegoshi nodded. “I know, Shige told me.”
“Monday…”
“You were a bit nervous, weren’t you? I was happy when you finally started to notice me.” Tegoshi buried half his face in his shawl. “It took so long, but you finally did. I was so happy.”
“I have a weakness for sweets”, Masuda blurted out and made Tegoshi turn his face to him; blinking in confusion. “I mean I love sweet things; that’s why you caught my attention.”
Tegoshi started to laugh and held his stomach after a while. “Thank you”, he said under his breath, trying to collect himself. His cheeks were red from the excitement and he leaned in a bit to get closer to Masuda.
“Come again to read, while having cake and tea, okay, Massu?”
Masuda smiled and watched Tegoshi, noticing that when he threw him that shy look under those dark lashes, he looked even sweeter.
With a nod, Masuda shifted closer, until their shoulders touched. Tegoshi leaned slightly towards him and he felt like he couldn’t be any happier.
“I’ll come again to read, while having cake and tea”, he agreed and then took Tegoshi’s hand, making him smile. There was that something again and Masuda figured it was affection.
“But first and foremost, I’ll come again to see you.”
