Gentle Lie

Kazuya opened his fridge and got out a bottle of water, taking it to his living room.

It had been a rather calm day, not much had happened and he had spent most of his time home, sleeping and relaxing.

It was almost ten and Kazuya thought about going back to bed and sleep the night through.  Tomorrow would be a long day for sure.

His telephone rang and Kazuya lifted a brow, checking the ID, before he picked up.

“Hey mom.”

“Kazuya”, she said in a warm voice, “we were expecting you today.”

He sat down on his couch and pulled up his legs. “Ah, yeah. I thought I’d come tomorrow.”

“Only tomorrow?”

“I have a job early tomorrow morning.”

She sighed. “Well, it’s fine then. But don’t be too late, we eat dinner at seven.”

“I know, mom, I won’t miss it.” He sipped from his water.

“Your brothers came, too. “

“They all did?”

“Of course. What did you think?”

Kazuya shrugged a shoulder. “I didn’t expect that.”

His mother laughed. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Sleep well, honey.”

“Thanks, mom. You, too.”

He hung up and sighed, going through his schedule for the next day in his head. It’d be a busy day, indeed.

He just stepped into his floor, as he heard a noise at the door and stopped, turning his head. He heard the door being unlocked, the handle being pushed down lightly, slowly, before the door opened.

Kazuya stared in disbelief, his lips opened, his eyes wide, the bottle of water still in his hands; its coolness at his skin reminded him that this was reality.

That he didn’t just imagine this and would wake up next moment.

A bag was put to the floor, the door closed and the key put to the shoe cabinet, its silver metal shone in the dim lights of the floor’s ceiling.

“What are you doing here?”, Kazuya asked, without moving.

“Tomorrow’s your birthday, isn’t it?”

Kazuya nodded slowly. “You came only for that?”

He got a shrug as an answer and a smile. “I figured I should spend the day with you.”

“I’m…”, Kazuya swallowed thickly. “I have work all day and spend the night at my parents’.”

“So, you’ll at least wake up next to me.”

Now, Kazuya managed a smile and he stepped forwards, until he stood in front of the other man. “I didn’t think you’d really come.”

“I had to. It felt wrong not to come for your birthday. I missed you.”

Kazuya didn’t withdraw, didn’t pull back from the kiss. It felt unreal, even a bit wrong, but Kazuya ignored that feeling.

It was what he wanted, what he needed.

Missing Jin had been too overwhelming, had thrown him out of his usual manners, so this had been the only logical consequence.

Being unhappy had been wrong for both of them, for him and Jin, too. Separating had been the worst mistake they had ever made.

Kazuya smiled, as they parted and took a deep breath, smiling.

“Thanks for coming.”

“I’m not just doing you a favour. I’m doing this for me, as well.”

Kazuya took another kiss, lacing their fingers. “I missed you, too.”

“It’s good to hear that.”

Uchi pulled him close, brushing a gentle kiss to Kazuya’s temple.

Not answering, Kazuya closed his eyes, returned the embrace.

Separating from Jin had been the worst mistake, he thought again and pressed his lips together, trying to shut those thoughts from his mind.

It had been the worst mistake, but it had been inevitable and couldn’t be made undone ever again. All Kazuya could do now was moving on.

Moving on with yet another lie.
