“Somehow, this frightens me.”
“Huh?” Masuda turned his head and stopped then, to let Tegoshi go ahead and climb the stairs to the plane first. “What?”
“The plane”, Tegoshi answered as he walked into the cabinet. “The flight.”
“I didn’t know you were afraid of planes. You did well every time we had to go by plane so far.”
“I didn’t know it either.” The younger one took his seat at the window and watched Masuda sitting down next to him. “But suddenly I am.”
“It’s your grandmother’s doing, for sure. What did she tell you?” Masuda took the board magazine and started flipping through the pages.
“Well, she mentioned horrible plane crashes every now and then lately. You know she’s up for all that esoteric stuff, so she kept telling me she saw in her dreams that I was going to be involved in one.”
“Crazy, old lady”, Masuda commented without looking up.
“Massu!” Tegoshi’s voice was sharp. “Don’t call her that.”
“She frightens her grandson on purpose.”
“She only worries about me.”
Masuda gave up on it and put the magazine back. “Yeah, I know. She loves you.”
Tegoshi smiled and nodded then. “She really does.”
“But, whatever she said, she’s not right. Everything’s going to be fine. We’ll have a nice time over there.”
“We’ll, yeah. Hopefully the crash happens at our way back.”
Masuda rolled his eyes, but didn’t comment on that. He put his huge bag under the seat in front of him and leaned back then.
“Are you going to sleep?”, Tegoshi asked.
“Um.” The older boy threw him a look. “It’ll be a long flight.”
“I think I’m too excited to sleep.”
“Eh? You never get nervous for concerts or events. This is not much different from what we usually do.”
Tegoshi shook his head. “It’s not about that. It’s more the anticipation of something happening during the flight.”
The motor started and Masuda looked out of the window for a moment, noticing they were moving. “You’re stupid.”
Tegoshi’s shoulders sagged down and he gave Masuda an annoyed look, before he turned his head and stared out of the window.
Masuda watched him, then he closed his eyes to sleep. He wasn’t afraid of the flight at all, and he knew Tegoshi wasn’t, either. They were both not the types to be and had never been. Tegoshi was acting childish to be now, just because his grandmother had been telling stupid stories.
Of course, there was a risk whenever you got on a plane, but you had the same risk for something to happen whenever you got on a car or train. That was what Masuda thought, so he was quite calm about it.
It was the first time he had seen Tegoshi since their call two days ago. He hadn’t called him the day before; just to prove to himself that he didn’t need to hear the other one’s voice, that he was totally fine with having no contact at all for a whole day.
It had been terrible.
But, Masuda thought and opened his eyes again, now he had Tegoshi by his side again and he would have him all to himself for the next few days. Okay, they were to go to interviews and they had the event, but it was just the two of them going, so he wouldn’t have to share Tegoshi’s attention with anyone else for the most time.
As he looked at Tegoshi now, while the plane was speeding up and departed from the ground, the younger one’s eyes and face were calm as he looked out of the small window next to him.
Even so, taking a closer look, Masuda noticed his hands were clenched and slightly shaky.
Without saying a word, Masuda stretched out his hand and gripped them. Instantly, they stopped shaking and Tegoshi turned his head.
He looked at Masuda, only to see him with his eyes closed again. With the plane breaking through the clouds and shaking a little, Tegoshi felt uncomfortable, but much calmer, since Masuda was with him.
He turned his hand around until his palm was touching Masuda’s and entangled their fingers.
Looking out of the window again, he missed the slight smile on his friend’s lips.
“Not even off the airport anyone’s recognizing us”, Masuda mumbled as they walked up the few stairs to their hotel’s entrance.
Tegoshi laughed at him. “I really don’t get you, Massu. What did you expect?”
“Reporters, Fans”, he answered simply.
“And there people say I was self-centred and arrogant.”
Masuda grinned at that comment and held the door for Tegoshi to walk in first. “They do say those things because you are like that.”
But Tegoshi wasn’t listening anymore. He was gazing around the huge entrance hall they were in right now. Their manager and a few people of the staff were already at the reception to get the room keys.
With a smile Masuda turned again to watch Tegoshi.
The younger boy surely looked excited. He was checking out the furniture, the decoration of the huge fire place in the corner and turned then to wave Masuda over. “Look at this, Massu!” The black-haired one walked over to him and Tegoshi pointed at a book. “It’s a guest book. Let’s learn how to write something in proper English; then we can leave a message at the end of our stay.”
Masuda nodded and as Tegoshi turned again to further check the room, his smile got even more affectionate. Somehow, Tegoshi really was cute; Masuda couldn’t blame himself for falling in love with a person like him.
“Masuda-kun.” He turned around to face their manager. “This is the key to your room. Get your things up and then try to get some good rest before dinner; tomorrow’s going to be a busy day for you both.”
Nodding, he turned and caught Tegoshi’s attention. “I’ve gotten our key, Tegoshi. Let’s go up to the room.”
Excited, Tegoshi came over to him and smiled, taking the key from Masuda’s hand. “I’ll go in first!”
“Ah, no, that’s Masuda’s key, Tegoshi-kun. This is yours.” Their manager handed Tegoshi a second one.
“We each get one?” They usually shared one key for their room.
Masuda noticed first, as he looked at the keys closely. “They have different numbers.”
“Yeah, you’re going to have a single room each. Dinner is at seven.”
Tegoshi stared as their manager turned and got his own bag, stopping once more to organize the plan for the evening with the staff. “We’re not sharing a room?”
“Looks like we won’t.”
Nodding, Tegoshi gave Masuda his key back and gripped his handbag then. “Then, let’s find out where our rooms are.”
Masuda followed him to the elevator and with some staff members they got up to their floor.
“Which number is yours?” Tegoshi looked at every door as they crossed the corridor.
“101”, Masuda answered. “Yours?”
“117.” The brunette stopped in front of a room. “Which would be this one.”
Masuda nodded. “I suppose mine is down the corridor at the other end.”
“So far away.”
He couldn’t help himself; it disappointed him just as much. “Well, if you’re feeling lonely, you can always come over.”
A warm smile spread across Tegoshi’s face and he nodded, before he opened the door and disappeared into the room; making excited noises. Masuda assumed the room was to Tegoshi’s likings.
He walked further and found his own room then. Less excited than Tegoshi, he closed the door behind him after he had stepped in and took a look around.
Right in front of him was a huge mirror with a drawer beneath. A comfortable looking bed was at the wall next to it and a small sofa across from it. A TV was set in the corner of the ceiling above it. A huge window showed the view of the city. It wasn’t dark yet; Masuda could look over buildings and water.
His bags had already been brought up for him and he immediately started to unpack them.
Halfway through his things and clothes he found the gift for Tegoshi. He had brought it, but wasn’t sure when to hand it over to the brunette. It was probably inappropriate to give him a gift now, almost three days after his actual birthday. So he unwrapped the toy and smiled at it. Looking at it like this, a dog really was cute. It couldn’t bark or follow Masuda; it wouldn’t climb his bed and lose his hair there. It couldn’t bite him.
It would just sit and remain there at his spot on the sofa and watch him with his round, lifeless button-eyes.
What a cute thing it was.
At the same time, Tegoshi was on his way through the hotel. He hadn’t even thought of unpacking his things once. He could do that later; or probably tomorrow. Or he wouldn’t unpack them at all; that would save work for him when they’d leave again.
He had found Masuda’s room at the end of the corridor, far across from his and had eavesdropped at the door for a moment. Hearing Masuda humming their song he couldn’t have refused a smile.
Now he was at the top floor of the building at a balcony and enjoyed the view.
Actually, Tegoshi enjoyed being alone a lot. It wasn’t troublesome for him at all to do things alone.
He’d been raised in a loving family and he appreciated company a lot; but he could also be on his own for quite a while.
Even so, he felt it was wrong to be up here all on his own right now. It wasn’t the feeling of wanting to have just anybody with him; it was the feeling of wanting that one person with him.
Lately, it had crossed his mind more often. Like when he was out shopping and saw a colourful shirt with star patterns he thought about how much Massu would like that. Or when he was at the restaurant with his family he had said things like ‘Massu would love these dumplings. I need to take him here sometime’.
It was always Masuda who was on his mind; whom he wanted to share his thoughts and experiences with. Always Masuda.
That feeling, actually, was strange to Tegoshi; he hadn’t really felt about anyone like that before and he didn’t quite know how to handle it. Even a few minutes ago when he had walked out onto the balcony, his first thought had been that he should show this to Masuda when the stars were out. It would look so beautiful; Tegoshi was sure about that.
He checked his watch and sighed then, deciding to walk down again. There was still some time left, so he’d pick up Masuda, so they could go together to the dining room.
Humming a cheery melody, he walked out the elevator at their floor and knocked Masuda’s door.
“What’s the matter, Tegoshi?”
“Let’s go to dinner together.”
Masuda checked the clock in his room. “I’m not quite done unpacking yet. Come in.”
Tegoshi sneaked into the room and without feeling uncomfortable or shy he fell down to Masuda’s bed. “I’m tired.”
“You didn’t sleep during the flight; no wonder.”
“You won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
Looking at Tegoshi who was lying on his stomach right now, his head comfortably resting on Masuda’s pillow, the older boy was sure he wouldn’t. He’d surely have that image in mind all night. “Most likely.”
“Then let’s go out tonight”, Tegoshi said.
“We’re having a full schedule tomorrow”, Masuda rejected the offer and didn’t notice Tegoshi’s pout.
“I just want to look around for a while.”
Putting his last pair of jeans into the drawer, the raven-haired turned to Tegoshi and nodded at him. He wouldn’t be able to reject Tegoshi’s wishes, anyway. “What’s your room like?”
“Pretty much the same as yours. Although, I don’t have such a nice sofa.” Tegoshi sat up and stretched. Then he spotted the stuffed toy. “What’s that?”
Masuda watched him picking up the dog. “Tinny.”
“Why do you have a toy version of Tinny and I don’t?”
“I bought it for your birthday. You’re always missing her, aren’t you?”
Tegoshi raised his head from the toy to Masuda; their gazes locked and for a moment, they just stared into each other’s eyes.
“You bought me a toy Tinny?”
“I couldn’t give it to you at your birthday; so I didn’t know whether you’d even still want it.”
Tegoshi’s look got soft and he managed a smile. “I do.”
“Well, then.” Masuda shrugged his shoulders, feeling uncomfortable, because Tegoshi seemed so touched. “It’s yours.”
The younger one only hesitated for a moment; then he made his way across the room and with the stuffed toy in his hand he wrapped his arms around Masuda’s shoulders. “Thank you.”
Unsure, how to react Masuda only slightly patted Tegoshi’s back. “You’re welcome.”
When Tegoshi noticed Masuda didn’t return the embrace, he clumsily let go and made a few steps back. “Sorry; that was too much. I really like it.”
Masuda swallowed thickly, felt his heart beat race and nodded. “I’m glad.”
Tegoshi smiled and walked past him to the door. “Let’s go downstairs then?” Nodding, he let Tegoshi go ahead. He dropped the stuffed toy dog in his room and Masuda waited outside for him.
Tegoshi took more time inside the room then he needed. He wanted to calm down, find back to his usual self.
He was used to hug Masuda, to lightly hold his hand occasionally, so he wasn’t sure why it had felt so awkward between them just now. He didn’t want them to be that way; he wanted it to stay as comfortable and easy between them as it had always been.
Tegoshi wasn’t sure what it was, but something had changed between them.
“I really don’t quite get why I have to sleep at the sofa in my own hotel room.”
Tegoshi snuggled into the sheets; the stuffed toy in his arm. “Because I am lying in your bed.”
Masuda threw Tegoshi a look and pulled the blanket closer to his chin. They had gotten the sheets from Tegoshi’s room over to his, because they had both decided that it felt more comfortable and less lonely to sleep in the same room.
Masuda had lost in janken; so he was sleeping at the couch.
Which was, he had to admit, larger than he had expected. And comfortable. Even so, he would have preferred the bed.
Earlier they had had a look around after dinner. They’d been walking for a while and had found some nice places, until it had gotten really dark outside, so they had decided to go back.
Tegoshi had taken Masuda up to the top floor where they had sat at the balcony for a while then.
“It was nice”, Tegoshi said now. “This evening.”
Masuda nodded. “It really was.”
Tegoshi smiled and turned off the light then. “These days are going to be fun.”
“Let’s work hard together.”
“Let’s”, the younger one answered.
Turning to face the back rest of the sofa, Masuda mumbled a “Good night” and silence fell upon them.
Tegoshi turned as well, pulling the dog closer to his chest, but couldn’t fall asleep. He heard Masuda’s breath go even and knew the older boy was already asleep. It was always easy for Masuda to sleep; Tegoshi usually needed more time.
He lay awake for a little longer and watched the moon he could see though the window. It had been really cold outside; colder than in Japan and to Tegoshi it felt as if even the moon light was colder.
When they’ve been up to watch the stars earlier, things had been back to normal between them. He had leaned against Masuda; they had been both agreeing on how cold it had been.
It had felt normal to stay like that, to have Masuda’s arm around his shoulders, pulling him close. Somehow, it had felt normal when Masuda had rubbed Tegoshi’s arms to warm him up.
That feeling was confusing and Tegoshi couldn’t quite describe it, but he felt restless when Masuda wasn’t there, cold when he didn’t touch the brunette.
That’s why he had talked Masuda into this. He wanted to have him around, to know Masuda was in the same room, made him feel much more relaxed.
Tegoshi watched Masuda’s back lifting and sinking frequently, heard him breathing, dipped in to the cold moon light.
It was just about five hours later that both their cell phones went off and ringed loudly to wake them.
Masuda shifted slightly and was about to stretch and yawn, when he noticed something hard hurting his chest.
He slowly opened his eyes and looked at Tegoshi, who was lying next to him, arm loosely over Masuda’s waist. The stuffed toy was between them; it’s hard plastic nose was poking into his chest, causing the pain there.
For a moment, Masuda could only stare at Tegoshi in disbelieve, then he got back to the position he’d been in before he woke up and pulled him close again. Their legs were entangled, Tegoshi’s face was pressed to Masuda’s neck; he could feel dry, soft lips against his skin.
This was bad, Masuda thought, but didn’t move at all. It was bad because it was exactly what he wanted. He just wished Tegoshi was aware of what he was doing, as well.
Their alarms went off for a second time and this time, Tegoshi moved. His hand gripped the hem of Masuda’s shirt and he sighed; the raven-haired felt Tegoshi’s warm breath against his skin.
Tegoshi slowly woke up and in a sudden move he lifted his head and stared at Masuda.
“Just remind me, please”, Masuda asked in a low and rough voice, not fully awake himself. “What exactly are you doing at my sofa?”
Tegoshi didn’t move a single bit. The alarms were still ringing, making his ears go numb, but he didn’t dare changing his position to turn them off. “I couldn’t sleep.”
It was Masuda who broke the contact, who sat up first, so that only still their knees were lightly touching. He took the toy dog and put it to their feet, rubbing the hurting spot at his chest. About to answer, he opened his mouth, but got disturbed by a knock at the door. “Masuda-kun? Are you awake?”
Throwing Tegoshi a look, Masuda got up and opened the door. “Morning.”
“Tegoshi’s not answering his door…”, their manager started, but Masuda only opened his room’s door wider, so that it would reveal a look at Tegoshi at Masuda’s sofa.
“He fell asleep here yesterday night.”
“Okay, then. Get ready, we’re leaving in an hour.”
With a nod, Masuda closed the door again and looked at Tegoshi who was lying sprawled out on his stomach, only partly covered from the blanket and watching Masuda over the pillow.
For a moment, both of them just held their gazes again; then Masuda turned away to the bathroom door.
“Next night, let’s sleep in bed in the first place; that sofa is too small for the two of us.”

Thanks so very much for reading.
On a random note: While I was working as a chambermaid in England, room 117 was my favourite room of those I had to take care of. It really was a lovely room ♥
