I Love My Canucks

It's been an amazing season, all the more so because I got to see the Canucks play right up into the middle of June. They gave Boston a run for its money and fought hard right to the bitter end. I'm pretty much in love with the whole team, and yeah... there were some tears when we didn't win at home, but in the end, I'm just grateful to the team ( Read more... )

It has indeed been an amazing ride. I've been so honoured just to follow it, and see how classy the guys have been through it all.

I'm so glad that the Canucks have given you the opportunity to meet so many new people and make friends. That in an of itself has made the whole thing worth it.

Both of us are going to be keen on the next season. I say we watch some of the games together with some ice tea, Canucks tee-shirts, and mad crushes on Kesler. ;)

Re: P.S.
The cover of the Vancouver Sun today features Luongo shaking hands with Thomas, and the headline 'Noble In Defeat'. The rioters got relegated to the end of Section A. You know how I don't swear lightly, but seriously, take THAT, fuckers.

They have been classy, haven't they? Especially against teams like the Sharks who continually played dirty - winning against them was one of the big highlights of the series.

Exactly. Being a Canucks fan really gives me a sense of being part of a community and yesterday, when I went out for a walk around the town, I saw so many people wearing Canucks colours and everyone greeting everyone else like old friends. It was great.

I agree - I will wear my Canucks jersey and my Canucks scarf and cheer on the Captain of my Heart like no tomorrow.

I love my boy so much. The boys are just so amazing in the way they are gracefully take defeat. It makes me proud to be their fan.

Amen to that, sister.

Have you seen the pictures of the clean-up efforts during the morning/day after? It's freaking incredible. People came out, dressed up in Canucks gear, and basically stormed the area with brooms, bags, and a of of compassion. Aside from some boarded up windows, the place looks like nothing ever happened. THAT sort of thing makes me proud to be a fan and a Vancouverite. This is what we're about. This is what we are.

(That's not even touching on the dude just outside my chiropractor's office that was carrying a big sign that read 'Smile for the Canucks' as he walked down the main drag alongside the traffic. Awesome.)

And that's the thing! Done right, sports form community...positive community. Sounds like you found that in spades, as did everyone here ( ... )

I woke up this morning and logged on to my computer to check my mail. The first thing I saw on the my homepage was that the Bruins had won. I believe my exact words were, "Well, crap." As a Floridian and citizen of the southern U.S., hockey is not something I follow with any vigor. I think of it as soccer on ice in which fights are allowed. I know it's more complicated than that, but it's the closest line I can draw to a sport I actually do love.

The "oh crap" is a result of you being one of the very few Canadians I "know." I have no reason to cheer for Boston, so why not root for the Canucks? Even if I only hear about the game on the ride in on sports radio every morning.

I'm sorry they didn't win. I'm more sorry that Vancouver made the news for all the wrong reasons. It's great that you got to meet people because Vancouver made it to June, though. I've found that very few things bring people together like sports.

Thanks so much for cheering for my sake - I really appreciate it. BTW, what is your soccer team so I can cheer them on?

What's really sad is that the news originally presented the situation as this being the fans who had started the riots, when it's just come to light after the riot that this was simply looters who were aiming to take advantage of the crowd to cause this chaos whether or not the Canucks won or lost. The fact that there were 8,000 volunteers the next day who came to help clean up the city probably didn't make the news, unfortunately.

I've found that very few things bring people together like sports.

Amen to that - I hadn't found such camaraderie since the Olympics last year!
