The Hobbit: There and Back Again

They've released a couple of set pictures from the new Hobbit movies. Words cannot describe my giddy reaction at seeing Bilbo Baggins, who has to be the most adorable Hobbit in existence. Not that I don't love Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry, but BILBO! My first literary love!

I have so many fond memories of this book. It was one of the first 'grown-up' books my mom ever read out loud to me. She had this old copy of the book, which she'd used in University for a Literary Fantasy Course. Now, my mom's a working woman, and sometimes she'd work so hard that she would come home exhausted and pretty much go straight to bed after eating. But tired as she was, she always made time for me and my sister. She read me the first two chapters, and I, impatient little thing that I was, stole the book from her the next night because she was "too slow" and read the rest of the book to her. Granted, we took a much longer time than we would have if my mom had continued reading, but it's one of those childhood experiences I'll always treasure.

As I mentioned before, I am giddy at the thought of the new movies coming out. I've read some of the interviews from Peter Jackson and I've been very interested to learn that The Hobbit is going to play out more as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings than a stand-alone story taking place in the same world with some of the same characters. According to the Wiki page, the Necromancer is going to play a larger role than he does in the books, where there are only a few passing mentions. I didn't realize until this article that the Necromancer was actually Sauron. It opens up a new playing field for the movies as now I wonder how Bilbo's discovery of the Ring will play out, and if Gandalf will realize immediately what the significance is of Bilbo's new possession.

I also wonder if Gollum won't end up playing a bigger role as well as the Ring. I've just finished rereading The Hobbit, and nothing is really made of the Ring's darker nature. Naturally, I assume that this would have to change for the movies as the viewers would most likely have seen the earlier trilogy and expect that the moment Bilbo picks up the Ring that it would set to work on him. Anyway, I'm excited to see how Peter Jackson adapts the book to fit the movie trilogy of The Lord of the Rings.
