EVERYTHING is about politics…I think a lot of people don’t always understand that to me being in this band and what I have to say is overtly political, just maybe not so obvious. I don't think people comprehend that the personal IS political - most of the stuff I write about is dealing with my anger over stuff to do with fucked up relationships/ ( Read more... )

"i also hate in the blog world when the blog dudes ALWAYS have to comment on a girls looks or says he has a crush on the girl musician."

This annoys me to no end! I can't tell you how many times guys have focused on my bands' physical appearance instead of the music we create. Even at shows guys have approached me just to tell me how cute we all are. It is like they're equating us to children: "Awww, how cute... they're playing guitars!"

Ughh...

Yesterday I joined a new band and I am the only female member. My bandmates are really awesome guys but I can already foresee our audience making comments about me and singling out my performance.

I feel like if I was in a band with all girls I would be treated differently. Im in a band with my sister who plays drums and a guy and in the punkrock scene where we live he is a well respected musician and has played in a lot of punk bands and I think its the fact he's in the band that we are taken seriously...I am also respected in the scene (I work in the ONLY punk club in our town, promote shows, dj there etc.) but its still not the same.
Also, what you said about how its easier for men to just get out and do it is true - and that women should just DO it, without caring - I feel so good having now done this, but that initial jump into playing live took me about AGES to do! and its not because I'm scared or feel threatened, just because I wanted to do something GOOD, maybe that stems down to me worrying about what people think in the punkclub where I work, because of my position there?

I really liked your piece of writing about this izzy. I really agree with what D says about just saying fuck em, you gotta do it anyway. It got me so mad reading reviews about Electrelane, especially in relation to Emmas drumming, and people writing really stupid ridiculous things about how they werent very good musicians. Ofcourse a lot of it comes down to the fact that they're women and they're gay. But its interesting looking at it in terms of being queer too ( ... )
