If I may join you in your rant - which I whole-heartedly agree with...

Much like acting or writing, teaching and education seems to be something everyone outside that particular environment thinks they could do better, and thinks they know better... When, as you point out, the people actually engaged in trying to educate the nation's youth probably have a pretty bloody good idea of what changes could and should be made to encourage improvements in teaching theory and practice.

And, you know, it would always be nice to actually be supported by your government (financially and structurally) to try and do the job you're hired to do, rather than faff around cutting education budgets and then decrying the lack of status and the results in the sector.
