Almost to the halfway mark of the year, and I'm nearly halfway through my reading challenge. Yaaaay!
- Icons was painfully dull and emotionless. I still don't think I understand what was happening with the plot since it was told in a bit of a non-linear fashion and not in a well done fashion either. The characters were bland, there was no tension with the plot, the concept wasn't even that interesting, and I skimmed toward the end because I just did not give a shit.
- If you haven't heard of or started the Chronicles of Egg series yet, please go find a copy immediately because it is SO GOOD. I forget how much I like a genuinely good children's series until I crack a book like New Lands open and get lost in it for a few hours. Chronicles of Egg is a little darker than most children's series, which I like as an adult, but the character are great and heartwarming, the plot and setting are so interesting, and did I mention the pirates? BECAUSE PIRATES.
- I did not have strong feelings about Tidal one way or the other, but so not looking forward to the unnecessary angst that's going to come out in the fourth book once Harper finds out about Daniel's deal with Penn. Harper continues to be the most annoying older sister on the planet - and I can say that as an older sister!
- After reading The Darkness Dwellers, I am now more sure than ever that Kristen Miller must've been "forced" to write the The Eternal Ones because there's such a difference in her style, quality and the obvious devotion to the Kiki Strike series. I love this series and these characters, and I really hope a fourth book is coming down the pipe soon!
- Someone on tumblr suggested I read the Elemental series by Brigid Kemmerer because it might be a series up my alley and clearly that anon knows me well because, as you can see, once I got started with this series, I could not stop. Guilty pleasure/book crack series, holla! The Elemental series about the four Merrick brothers, each who control a separate element, and their various fights against Guides who are trying to kill them for being so powerful. Plus the obligatory romance. I thought Spark was the best of the three, but probably because Nick - the hotheaded, emotionally stunted one of the group - is my forever fav, but WHATEVER.
I would've given the books higher ratings on Goodreads if Kemmerer didn't have the unfortunate habits of using sexual assault as a off-handed plot point and being knee deep with the slut shamey language almost every book. The sexual assault storyline gets resolved in the first book, at least, but I was disappointed to see a similar situation crop up in the second. Stop using that cheap crutch to get the characters in a scene together, Kemmerer!
- The Daughter of Smoke and Bone was surprising, and definitely one of the more interesting, innovative and creative books I've read all year. Can't wait to read the sequel. I've got it sitting on end table and ready to go.
- Dan Wells's John Cleaver series is so compelling and yet so repulsive and creepy at the same time. Wells gets all the props from me for making me want to root for John constantly but making him such a skin crawly kind of character. I'm in the middle of the third book right now, and I don't have the drive to blow through it as fast as Mr. Monster because a) last book (so far!) and b) John is going to make a Huge Mistake and things will not be good and ughhh conflicted feelings! But I would highly recommend this series for people who like horror and mystery.
Currently reading: I Don't Want To Kill You by Dan Wells.
Up next: Ummmm... I don't know? Possibly Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler since it's going to be due back to the library soon.
