While I have been spending rather a lot of my time reading materials for work, I have been slowly making my way through a "fun" book, namely A Perfect Red: Empire, Espionage, and the Quest for the Color of Desire. So far, it's been pretty enjoyable. It traces the history of the color red, as seen in cloth and other dyed items, touching on the ( Read more... )

*sigh*
I've seen none of these, unfortunately, and I may well not get to see them (although Oscar nomination will hopefully keep them in the cinema longer :). So... no advice from me.

Yes, I should think that some will be around at least until the Oscars are awarded. FWIW, Little Miss Sunshine was indeed very good, and plenty of good fun. It might be worth a trip (even to the video store) to take a break from the monotony of diss. writing (how I remember, and how I loathe it!).

Yeah, I already own Little Miss Sunshine, too, and have watched about three times already.

I'm not sure I liked it enough to buy it, but it was pretty entertaining. The end was certainly rewarding; I'd have to say that it didn't quite make up for the strongly negative reaction I'd had to the family dynamics in the first 2/3 of the film. But since you liked this, you may also like Keeping Mum, which I mentioned in the original post: Kristen Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith and Rowan Atkinson (most surprisingly good). What's not to like?

Meh... *shrug*

As you probably recall, I didn't find Little Miss Sunshine particularly successful, but as it's the only one I've seen that's not The Queen, I rather have to recommend it. I was thinking about Babel, but having not seen it, didn't want to lead you into something I have enograsp on.

Well, as it turns out, I'm with you. I liked it rather well, and certainly I laughed and was rooting for Olive, but overall, I think I was suffering from too-high-expectations. I think Keeping Mum (see above) was actually more enjoyable.

Little Miss Sunshine was the only one not thoroughly depressing. I've seen them all and actually loved all of them, but for uplifting, an a quirky kinda way, see Sunshine.

Yeah, it was good for that, at least. I usually like Serious Films, but I'm not sure I'm up for the emotional turmoil of Babel. I do want to see The Departed, though. Perhaps that will be next.

I'd love to hear what you think of The Departed. Babel was not as emotional as expected it to be. Certainly not as much as Crash, which got me completely worked up.
