LunatusSlee (10:35:46 PM): seriously, how do you congratulate someone on being good looking?

of course, then, you wouldn't be able to congratulate anyone on being smart or funny either, as those are no more earned than looks (though one could improve one's humor or become more knowledgeable... but one can improve looks too by hard work and so on.) eh, despite not being attractive myself, i think the world needs beauty where it can find it. (which is not to say that people should be forced into false, impossible standards of beauty.)

I'd say there's certainly a difference in degree. Both humor and intelligence rely on experience, and while the brain's innate toplogy obviously is relevant, it isn't the only factor. Like intelligence and personality traits of all stripes, circumstancce and environmental factors affect physical growth/ultimate appearance, but the structural proportionality that we find pleasing to the eye is far more reliant on inborn qualities. Hard work - without invasive surgery - doesn't really do as much good.

I do agree the world can use beauty, though, wherever and however its found.

I disagree... maintaining a standard of beauty requires natural qualities but also, in many people, work... dieting, exercising, accessorizing, cosmetics, the right hair products, etc. It's not as intellectually stimulating as some other things but it's still work... humor and intelligence, like attractiveness (not great beauty, of course, which is different-- as is, one would note, great genius), are biological seeds nurtured by experience and effort.

Developing intelligence and humor theory through work (and even that same biological seed, eg, mental stimulation during flowering dendrite stages of the brain) is a continual and aggregate accomplishment. Aside from dieting and exercising (both of which are balances for the slightly unhealthy aspects of modern existence), the particular sort of work you mention as concerns attractiveness is temporary - an attempt at concealing and drawing attention away from flaws, while heightening positive elements. I think a comparison could be learning trivia and french phrases to just appear intellectually impressive without actually acquiring much substance ( ... )
