President Obama removed his class-warrior hat long enough to spend $74k on a date with the First Lady last weekend. The trip to New York to take in a Broadway show was a campaign promise the President made to his wife.

Well, maybe we should look at what his predecessor spent on such recreations while he was in office, and then look at the cost of this trip relative to that. I seam to remember George and Barbra being rather lavish in their choice of recreation. I checked out the menu at Blue Hill, and while those certainly are not prices I'd shell out for a just a casual dinner, they are comparable to what I've paid here in Seattle for a splurge at a better then average restaurant. They are certainly not as high as the prices at the top restaurants here in Seattle. I figure that if it's in the ball-park of what I was able to afford on tech support pay, I don't think it's extravagant for the President to pay. Now, I have to admit that I have never paid that much to see a show, but since those tickets were still only twice what I paid for Transiberian Orchestra last year, still not to extravagant. As for jet-setting, I hardly call a trip from DC to NYC, dinner, and a show to be jet-setting. Really, the only thing that made the trip expensive is ( ... )
