“Tonight you will be home earlier, my love, won’t you?” Prudence used to ask every day before Cutler left the house for the Company.
“I shouldn’t be, dear. No need to wait up” Cutler would reply every day when Prudence asked. For many years it didn’t encourage her from waiting up for him until at least four candles burned down and she couldn’t keep her eyes open for another second. The next morning she would find herself in bed snuggled up against Cutler.
Some weeks after their third anniversary, Prudence had grown weary of waiting and accepted her place was the one of a business man’s wife. First she attended two of the local balls and came home sleepily yet happy and accomplished. Prudence had opened the door to her bedroom, when she found a warm bundle in her bed instead of cold sheets. Cutler was snoring away and wouldn’t even move when Prudence’s cold feet touched his.
That night he broke Prudence’s heart and set the flame of her infinite anger - by sleeping alone in their bed.
