For Friends Only

My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror.
- W. Somerset Maugham

It was nice imagining that I could post my opinions, stories about my life, and information about myself on LiveJournal and yet still remain invisible. Unfortunately, I learned ( Read more... )

Yes companies do searches of blogs, etc. Google has made it really easy to scour the web for things posted about your company. Most of the time it's NOT to check up on employees. It's usually done to find out out how people think the company is doing. Being that I am in hospitality, we look for blogs to see what people write about our service, etc. Unfortunately you have pointed out the downside of this practice. It can interfere with people's personal lives. You and another friend of mine on here have experienced this action. Actually (as you know), I have experienced it as well. I am glad not to be at my last job. I am MUCH MUCH MUCH happier where I am now...and if they read about it, I am fine with that. ;-)

But even your "friends" can copy, paste and forward...Not that I would. I am constantly struggling with how much I want to reveal and maintain that whatever I post has the potential to be forwarded. The result is a somewhat milktoast blog that doesn't reflect what is really going on.

But please friend me if you haven't already! :)

While there is that possibility that friends will gank my stuff, I don't imagine it happening: I assume that a certain privacy is respected in the lj circles, and so I'm not worrying about it.

I've found it easier to be friends-only by default, with an occasional public post as the exception; lets you freely insert personal material. I assume you have the "Minimize your journal's inclusion in search engine results" box checked....

Sounds like a good idea... I'll try it later at some point. The posts I made that steered me toward my decision certainly were more sensitive than many others in the past. I'll have to look for that "Minimize" choice as well in the options pages.

I have not taken the step of making my entire LJ friend only, but there are certain posts that I have done so. Like you, I got smacked by my company for even posting a positive note about them. Also, in January I posted the 30 days of secrets meme which definitely had to make it friend only as there was some very sensitive information there...
