In the book they're adorned with Rubies once Glinda enchants them. :)

they're silver in the musical in the beginning but become red. by the time the house is on her, they're red.

ah, that makes sense. I've never watched the musical D: so yeah.. (read the book, have the soundtrack, read the script, but never seen the musical)

Don't remember. It was at this one site called Defying Gravity though (would try googling it, but there are so many Defying Gravity that it would probably take forever to go through everything). It was posted at wicked_musical a long time ago I think.
