Alan does that a LOT - uses gay as a derogatory - based on Con reports and interviews I've seen. I think he means it in a humorous way, but that kind of humor typically comes from a place of discomfort and/or underlying contempt. I don't know if that's the case with Alan or not - he's more than willing to play gay characters, for example, but he''s always quick to tell people "but *I'm* not gay, totally not" at the same time.
That is not cool. And it makes me sad cause like you I'm an Alan fan. The saddest part is how I'm sure to him and most people who laugh at the shirt they don't realize how homophobic they're being. They just think they're making fun of Twilight. Never mind that there are soooooooooooo many ways to make fun of Twilight without offending an entire group of people.
