As a tall ship sailor, this is a public service announcement for ALL of you wishing to talk like a pirate:

Avast means stop -- hold your line, don't drop it, but stop hauling or easing. It is a nautical term, not a generic pirate word.

I was told, chastized actually, by a Brit for using the term "Limey". She said that Limey was an insulting name given to English sailors of olde because of all the limes they consumed during a voyage to avoid scurvey, which resulted in severely decayed teeth due to the acid in the limes.

Unverifed fact of the day.
