Well females were never able to become Catholic priests. They have some silly reasoning for it, like becoming a priest is a calling from God but you have to be celibate and God would never call a woman away from her natural duty to bear children. (Becoming a nun is a choice, not a calling. I'm not sure why women are allowed to choose celibacy when their natural calling is to bear children but whatever, it's stupposed to be a "mystery.") So I can kind of see them excommunicating people who decide to ignore that rule and become/ordain female priests anyway. But I agree that it would make a lot more sense, in this climate where hardly anyone wants to be a Catholic priest, to consider revising that rule to allow the women who do want to be priests to be ordained, so the religion doesn't die out entirely. Then again, in all honesty I'm not sure that would be such a bad thing ...
