ugh this is all truth and then even when you think about it, the only model for parenting Dean ever had would be his dad, who seems pretty harsh, so that makes all Dean's little softnesses with Sam and basically giving him all of the things (lucky charms cereal, man. there was only one bowl and dean hadn't had any yet! THAT IS SRS BSNS) and the way he makes space for Sam to be whoever he wants to be (like ok you don't have to be a tough-ass hunter macho man because whatever you are is perfect and fine and you're so smart and and and I'm proud of you) WHERE DID ALL THAT COME FROM
HE DIDN'T LEARN IT FROM HIS DAD AND HE DIDN'T HAVE HIS MUM AROUND SO

and like there's never any question about sammy being special and needing protection and dad being special because he's superman and dean's just like ok well my goal in life is to be worth their time basically I mean what is that
tl;dr version so basically we're saying dean's entire life philosophy is "BECAUSE SAMMY"
it's like that part of him loves sam so much it realises that ok, the standards and expectations his father has around them are suffocating and kinda impossible really and Sammy deserves to break free from that if he wants and admires him for being brave enough to do so
but when it comes to him he just, like, accepts those standards as given
and doesn't even see the contradiction 'cos he's messed up in the head
