My understanding from the press release and other assorted posts is that the folks who were let go were primarily the development techies. The infrastructure and service techies are still around, but development will be moving to the Moscow offices. Still not good news, but not as dire as it may seem.

The good news is, this has been a kick in the ass to get DreamWidth up and running, and among their top priorities for launching the site are the ability to port LJs, userpics, and tag (and possibly comments, if they can work out the legal issues) over to DW wholesale. See comments here.
