so for the last, oh, four or so weeks, i've been having trouble sleeping. at least one (sometimes as many as three) night a week i will not be able to sleep until four or five. and then at five-thirty, or six-thirty, or seven-thirty i'll wake up and not sleep again that day

I have trouble sleeping too. I found three things that work well for me.
* Exercise - just a bit - early in the evening. This helps with "The mind is sleepy but the body is not."
* Make your sleep schedule as regular as possible. Just getting into the habit of sleeping at a specific time helps.
* Don't eat anything for at least an hour before your scheduled sleep time, especially nothing with caffeine or sugar in it.

- Severe sleep deprivation
- Light stretching before bed
