as i rode to school this morning, i thought about how i used to feel nauseous whenever i rode in the car for more than about 20 minutes...but now i have two longish rides everyday (~31 min) and i don't get sick ( Read more... )

I think it has something to do with having one's bearings. Carsickness is usually caused by contradictory information coming into to your brain from your eyes and your inner ear's equilibrium mechanism. As you become accustomed to the route, you start to know where you are relative to the horizon line, which resolves the dissonance. People are more likely to get carsick on unfamiliar routes ( ... )

but is adapting always the best thing a person can do? maybe sometimes it is better to leave the situation. hmm...i wonder if people adjust to, say, the smell of a poisonous gas.

Usually -- not always, but usually -- we have a more strongly negative response to something really lethally dangerous like that, because, in the scope of evolution, it probably isn't the first time our species encountered such a thing and we are largely the descendents of the people who fled the poison gas last time it cropped up ( ... )
