That Sir Ed had died. He always struck me as a damn good bloke. Everest was not the only achievement he did over there. He made a difference. Hospitals, schools... I was proud of what he did. My boy learnt about him last year at school, pointed him every time we had a five dollar note. A good racehorse I used to handle was named after him (grumpy ( Read more... )

I get news alerts from the New York Times popping up in a mail collection window on my laptop. What popped up yesterday said 'Sir Edmund Hillary, the first to climb Mount Everest.'

I never knew the Americans were so behind on current events. LOL.

I was very sad to read about this this morning. Saw a TV program about the first ascent a while back which featured interviews with him and dealt a lot with his charity work for Sherpa children.

He seemed like a lovely man.

*nods* Always grew up knowing he was a hero, not just because he put a boot print on the top of Everest, but because he left even more lasting marks with the Sherpas. NZ's own answer to Mother Theresa, but you know, with a pick axe and climbing gear....
