Wow, is it a bad sign that my first thought was "Good advice for dealing with families, too."

Hahaha!
NO, it's not a bad sign. "You can't argue with crazy" comes from my own family experiences. The funny thing is that I had a much easier time loving the crazy people in my life once I was able to say "you're nuts right now" and just let them say the unstoppable nutty things they were compelled to say.
I couldn't love them when we were fighting for control of each other and someone had to be Right.

Yeah, that was the line that made the thought pop into my head. :D

Sometimes I wonder if my non-nuclear family wonders where I wandered off to... I don't talk to basically any of them any more because I couldn't deal with the negativity and the crazy.

my big “aha” moment came from the simple advice - 'nobody else can make you do anything'. You alone choose to do everything that you do.

Sounds simple, but has quite powerful repurcussions if taken to heart!

I couldn't agree more.
That there is the Everlasting GobStopper of the Soul.
You can just keep chewing on it again and again, and you'll keep realizing that you are (semi-) consciously choosing to feel the way you do. And you can change that whenever you feel like taking yourself someplace else.

Heavy, rewarding stuff.

(/me bows deeply)
