Metaphor I was not expecting

So I'm shelving and reshelving and flipping through books as part of the redecoration process (theoretically in the hopes of finding things I'm prepared to get rid of, which is...not really happening) and ran across this bit in Melinda Snodgrass's Tears of the Singers:

I know I've read that one because I adored Uhura as a kid/teen and I remember that I read it, but I don't have any memory of if it was any good. Because I was completely uncritical when it came to books about Uhura :)

I think I've still got it on the shelf downstairs...maybe I'll reread it at some point.

It apparently features a Uhura romance, lots of Klingons, and ultra-powerful psychic alien whales who weep crystal tears. Or something like that.
