Contemplating major non-SCA costuming projects

One of the things that therandver and I have fun with is the serious enabling that goes on between us on our various interests, which are hugely complementary. I've been asked to come up with something steampunkish for D-C next summer, to go with a 'crewmember of one of Her Majesty's Airships', and I'm feeling simultaneously spoiled and challenged, and I ( Read more... )

Have you ever looked at Girl Genius, web-comics? Find at http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20091118

P.S
She's not normally that color(s)...

and you don't have to be "punk-ish" you can be very Victorian-ish with the addition of cog wheels and such... but I definitely see you along the lineage of a Heterodyne... nods... very much so...

I think you're looking for the word... underbust? for the short waist corset

For more inspiration... I send you to Clockwork Couture http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=catalog/29

and recommend that you joined the various lj steampunk groups...

Hope that was helpful

Thanks! I'll go hunt those down...but no, it's not underbust. It's a specific word, like 'dolman' - but that's a sleeve shape. I'll probably think of it while doing something else more important. :D

The thought of you in knee-high boots and jodphurs will ditract me for the rest of the day.

The girl-engineer look would be smashing.

Steampunk is just a name.
Its more alternate history than punk
Punk here to me means different/alternative

My alternate steampunk identity has a visiting card that reads: "Actress, artist's model, cultural anthropolgist, roving scholar, markswoman, poetess and girl genius."
I opted to play off the dicotomy of women's roles in the era.

We actually had a long talk about this plan at FC. It's going to be fun. Poor Seth didn't realize what was going on until it was too late.

Were I you, I would go with the engineer thing, but let your girly side go wild at the same time.

I just got a great 1900 driving coat/duster pattern, and have a huge hat to go with it.

I read this comment and thought, "Ohhhh. There's personas? Oh riiiight. This is a game, isn't it. Hmm." (random attack of the oblivious gene. Or possibly I gave up significant real estate upstairs to the LEED process.)

When told to R, he laughed and laughed and laughed.

Definitely going with the engineer thing. I want to invent some imaginary tools somehow for a toolbelt - will read your book reccs for ideas.

Is the duster the Folkwear pattern? Once upon a time I had that, but never finished it. Yay for fantastic hats!

Also, the steampunk book I'm pushing on everyone right now is 'Boneshaker" by CM Priest.

The quintessential steampunk book is "The Difference Engine," by William Gibson and Bruce Stirling.
