Wizards and vampires and larpers, oh my!

I have survived my first One World by Night game last night. Hooray! Okay, so I've played in a few other One World by Night games, but those were all sort of pending-for-approval-to-join-the-organization games. This one actually had a pretty good sized player base (I counted, there were around thirty-five to forty players ( Read more... )

Heyas,

I'm curious, what type of concepts did Fred have shot down? OWBN's Rare and Unusual guidelines can take a little getting used to, especially for folks coming from a strong troupe background.

The first character, the gargoyle, was a pretty basic (as far as gargoyles go). It was intentionally designed to be as un-twinkish as possible. Of course, that said, it was a gargoyle. We pretty much assumed it would get rejected ( ... )

Gargoyles (free or not) fall under the Rare category, and as such require a simple majority vote of the council. That involves submitting the sheet and background for review to the council list, and I can say from experience (I'm the council rep for the O.C. Anarch game) that the best way to get any concept through council is to get the respective coord on board with the concept. If the coord loves it, chances are everyone else will fall in line.

That said, dealing with it isn't that big a deal - other than the obvious waiting game - and I'm sorry if the L.A. players made that sound more daunting than it really is.

I heard the lecture as well, and while I agree that it came off a little heavy handed, unfortunately it's true... council takes a dim view of character concepts being played before they're approved, and while your specific concepts might not have been cheesy, there is a significant portion of the council which regards anything R&U as cheesy ( ... )

Do you mean to say that the gargoyle concept (or any other R&U concept) can be approved by the council without needing to go through the local game staff? Obviously, the LA staff has final approval on what they allow in their game; but if Fred can get the council's approval directly, I think it would help.

No worries, I doubt that my character would have been effective against a demon eating the Hollywood sign. Plus, I enjoyed the idea of shuffling a bunch of vampires into a short bus. The damndest thing of it is, though, is that a surprising number of the folks present actually listened to me and went along with the scheme (maybe they liked the idea of the short bus also).
