It usually comes in the form of commercials before a movie in a theater. I see shallow gender stereotypes, fetishization of stupidity (as myopian8 aptly put it, "Those people are voters!"), sports obsessions, and oversimplification of real issues. And it seems dumb to me ( Read more... )

at my job i make about 100-150 phone calls a day scheduling safety checks on people's meters for the gas company. i'm a legitimate gas company employee doing them a necessary service. a service we only have to perform once every five years. a lot of people are fine, but most of the time, these people are literally the scum of the earth. they're stupid, they're belligerent, they're unbelievably self-centred in ways that don't even make sense-- you wouldn't believe if i told you how many people i called over the summer who went into a goddamned tirade about how four hours was an ETERNITY and they would absolutely not be sacrificing that much time with their children in the summer for *me.* as though i, out of the darkest most evil parts of my heart, am doing this just to inconvenience them ( ... )

Well, nothing wrong with following a sport... what's absurd is - ah, hell, I'm not awake enough to think right now. Suffice it to say I think we can agree there's something bad and ridiculous there, but to sum it up as "sports obsession" is not a good way of putting it. Or perhaps it is - "sports obsession", not "sport obsession" - obsession with the idea of "sport" - which could well be said to be part of that particular problem, the idea that these things are worthwhile because they are "sports", rather than on their own merits. Hm. Don't feel like thinking about it too much right now.

Allow me to go a bit further and say that, in the long run, transhumanism is really the only way... :P
