Late Interview

Jul 25, 2006 18:44

I requested this interview from beeporama, like, ages ago, but for some reason I didn't get an email when he replied with the questions. Seeing a random interview in someone else's journal reminded me of it, so I went back to look and, lo and behold, there they were, waiting for me.

So, without further delay...

1. What is "Art"?Well, in the broadest ( Read more... )

Thanks, me too! It's cropped out of a picture from Suzanne's surprise pirate birthday party last year. I thought an actual picture of me would be sort of more apropos for this entry.

My Tekken skills are actually not up to par right now - I was very happy with Tekken 5, but for some reason I just haven't played as much of it as I did the previous games.

So yeah, if you're, you know, in the area some time, maybe we can have a "chess and Tekken" day. :-)

Mmmm, I'd have to add on to your definition of art. It has to challenge your everyday aesthetic taste in some way. Producing an aesthetic reaction is necessary, but it has to be at an abstract level higher than the audience would normally have with mainstream media.

For instance, if the mainstream idea of female beauty is Jenna Jameson, then for themone level higher than that might be "Girl With Green Eyes" from National Geographic, and that would be considered art.

I disagree. I don't think "art" is a thing with specific bounds and measures, or a discreet set of objects. I think it's an angle from which you can view anything in the world. You might find more or less artistic merit in a particular thing, personally, of course, but I don't see how you can decree that it is or isn't "art" with any sort of objective authority.

To specifically address your example, if somebody takes a picture of Jenna Jameson, and somebody else looks at it and says, "Wow, that's really gorgeous," how is that not art? Or, to put it another way, is there such a thing as bad art? (I would say yes, from an individual perspective, and that's what most pictures of Jenna Jameson probably are, to me. To the guy saying "Wow, that's gorgeous," maybe those pictures are great art.)

I think there is a boundary. People argue back and forth that something is art or not-art, and that assumes that there's a third thing involved: the standard by which we measure artistry, by which an artwork is either closer to or farther from achieving. I can hardly imagine anyone looking at the poverty in the red light district of Calcutta and saying "This is beauty."

The fact that some people argue whether certain things are art or not-art does not necessarily imply that it is an useful distinction, and I can easily imagine depictions of the red light district of Calcutta to be valid and socially useful works of art. There are many famous examples of just that sort of thing.
