Is there an emergency clinic you can get to? That could potentially damage his intestines, I should think.

Why are cats so friggin dumb? *hug*

Also - how thick is the plastic? Is it thin clingfilm stuff that could twist up into stringiness? Garrotted alimentary canal is very very bad.

No, it's fairly thick. Stupid cat. I don't get it, because if his tuna is a little too old, he won't touch it, and yet he eats plastic.

With a goddamned TURKEY printed on it.

X-posted from Brunchma because you sound so worried:

Sorry, but you need to get him checked. If a little string of that plastic gets lodged in his digestive bits, this could be extremely bad.

In the mean time, watch him to see if he resumes normal litter box use, and make sure he is taking in water. Those two things would be extremely good signs.

If you see any plastic hanging out of his butt, do NOT pull on it, just get him to the vet.

Thank you for that last bit of advice. I certainly would have yanked it out.

I've talked to the emergency vet, and she says that if he is not throwing up constantly, to see if he throws up again in the night. If yes, bring him in.

If not, feed him a bit and wait an hour to see if he throws up again.

She seemed really certain it wasn't an emergency to get him x-rayed tonight.

I've also cleaned his box, so we can control if he poos.

This is to Harry:

Do not worry your people like this. They're delicate creatures who handle stress poorly. If you wish for their attention, you should yowl loudly, constantly get in their way, and bite their ankles. Eating plastic is passive-aggressive and all wrong.

Also, dogs eat out of the trash. You don't want to be known as HarryCatDog do you?

(Yes, I know cats get into trash too. Honey can be very bad about it.)

I wouldn't panic. My Juno just loves to snack on plastic, particularly grocery bags. It's nearly impossible to keep all instances of this sort of yummy plastic away from her at all times.

She's been nibbling on these delights for a very long time - many years - and puking it back up. So far, no digestive distress from it. If I worried and took her to the vet every time she puked up plastic, I'd be bankrupt by now.

And she is so very small and fuzzy!!!

Harrycat has forgotten to be forlorn and sick now that I've gotten him out a new cat toy... I'm thinking he'll probably be ok.

*eyeroll*

Thanks for the reassurance. It's just he's *never* puked before except the one time he coughed up a hairball. (We all clapped. It only took him about 3 months...)

Animals puke, and unless it's a very wacky color or if they're doing it repeatedly, like every day, then I wouldn't worry too much. Part of the fun of being a pet owner.

Juno not only gorges on plastic when she can find it, she's also bulemic. She is small because of that damn Kate Moss character. I keep telling her, she's beautiful just the way she is, she doesn't have to binge n' purge, but does she listen to me? Of course not!

please update and let us know how he's doing in the morning (it should be getting near morning now, ya?).

Well, he was very purry and slept with us all night.

Duncan gave him half his usual food at 630 this morning. He ate some and didn't puke, and is eating some more now, but he hasn't pooed.

I will come home at lunch and check on him and see if he's gone. If not, I will call the vet again.

I am thinking it might be ok that he hasn't pooed, as he hasn't kept anything down since the last time he did, right?

I reckon.

I'd also wager that the consistency of the sort of plastic you get round sausage is probably enough to make a cat vomit it up. so it may well all be up and out.

Some of the plastic may come out the other end when he does, too. I've on occasion found some interesting kitty turd sculptures in the box.
