Word Count: 436
Summary: Delilah and the Inspector talk about Violet
Notes: Written because I still want the Inspector and Violet to be together forever, and because I love Delilah, no matter what anyone says.
“So… she’s lost to you… completely then?” Delilah ventured carefully. She hadn’t known this man, this… Inspector very long. She knew he was touchy on the subject of Violet, but he had been at least willing to speak about her. Delilah just wasn’t sure how far was too far.
“Completely,” the Inspector replied curtly.
Delilah thought about taking his abruptness as a hint and backing off, but ever the romantic, she just couldn’t let it go. “Yeah, but…it can’t be completely completely, right?”
“Completely.”
“O-kay,” Delilah said to the Inspector’s back, where he stood tensely against the railing. She could tell she was hitting on some sore spots, but she also knew that if they were going to be sure that the DARSIT wasn’t going to malfunction again, those spots needed to be pressed.
After a few moments of silence, she decided to soldier on. “But not completely-”
“Yes, Delilah!” the Inspector said shortly, turning on her. “Completely completely. She’s stuck on the other side of the continuum. I watched it as it closed around her. She’s gone. Forever.” He turned around to move toward the door. “Completely completely.”
Delilah couldn’t let it go. “But what if she’s waiting for you?”
That stopped the Inspector dead in his tracks. Delilah waited for him to turn around. He didn’t, and she wasn’t sure whether or not he was furious. She took a deep breath. “What if she’s over there, waiting for you to come and get her, thinking that you’re over here missing her so much that you’re doing everything you can to save her? While you’re actually just over here, feeling sorry for yourself because you lost the woman you -” she stopped herself from using the word ‘love’, not wanting to push it anymore than she already had, using words the Inspector had never actually used. “-cared so much about.”
The Inspector turned to look at her, his face a mixture of emotions Delilah didn’t even want to try to figure out. She expected him to scold her. She half expected him to stop the DARSIT and throw her out. Instead he said nothing. He just stared at her. Swallowing past her crippling fear, she said, “What if Violet’s over there doing everything she can to get back to you, and you’re over here doing nothing?”
She watched as the Inspector’s face became incredibly angry, and then turn incredibly sad. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Your best.”

On the other side of the continuum, Violet sat beneath the stars.
She set the coordinates, aimed the beam, and waited.
“Come and find me, Inspector.”
