The repetition of "the last" here is meant to reinforce the sense of loss. I wrote this something like two days after the finale, and it's very much a reaction fic -- I still can't believe the show ended on a note like this.
He doesn't want to remember, but he had Simon rev up his liver function a couple of years ago, and now he can't drink enough to forget. He still tries, taking shot after shot straight from the bottle, but it comes to him regardless:
I like the idea that Cavil lets Simon screw around with his metabolism, like the mad scientist and his robot. It's a fun dynamic.
Everybody had paired up at random, almost as if it were their last night alive instead of the first. He'd ended up on the floor with a Simon, another Cavil, and a very willing Doral, like in one of those jokes where they all walk into a bar.The punchline to this joke is, of ( ... )

There are a couple different callbacks to the series, here: "good hunting" is the phrase the Colonials use to wish the Viper pilots well, and "whatever else you are, you are that" comes straight from Six's words to Baltar, when she tells Baltar to "become a man" on Kobol. I liked the sound of that line, and it seemed appropriate, because Scar has just come of age in the same way...
It doesn't, at least not right away. He and his brothers fly many more times, learning, growing.

I think this is my favorite of the Hybrid-babble bits from this fic. This conception of the Raiders really is just like some horrible video game.
