I wrote two stories for Yuletide 2010, both for
Moon (2009):

Aww! I liked Fifteen Years of Experience!
From the Moon to the Earth - I just read The Velveteen Rabbit this Christmas since I loved Toy Story 3 so much so your quote there is fresh in my mind.
What I like about all three of your Moon stories is the idea that GERTY or one of the Sams or the Skin Horse are keepers of knowledge, back and back and back. There's a sense of continuity and history there. A feeling of time not erased and rebooted.
I like that. :-)

Yes, definitely. I think that's what Moon is about, in a lot of ways: maturing, facing mortality, and the sense of generativity and wisdom which grows out of that process. In the beginning, Sam only wants to forget the Moon and go home; in the end, the things the Sams (and GERTY) do are done for the Moon, to ensure that the lessons of their Sam-and-GERTY society won't be forgotten. Wisdom guides youth to save the village from extinction: there is no older story than that.
GERTY's reboot-sacrifice is significant precisely because he knows someone must remember, and he knows it can't be him. He's passing the torch.
Thanks as always for your wonderful comments... I'm glad you enjoyed these stories!
