I'm posting it over at Engineers @ Archive Of Our Own -- if you log in to your Ao3 account and then go to my author page and hit "subscribe", it'll email you whenever I post a chapter.

PM me if you need an invite!

God! I love your take on the whole directive thing and how it affects the programs, how Alan tells CLU about the real world (I had always assumed that Kevin's memories were copied over to CLU so that he would know, but this is a great take on the topic!) - and and...

°o° ... just everything! I'm so sorry for not being able to put it into words better, but just - I love it! I'm staying tuned for the next chapter! Thanks so much for writing and sharing!

Thanks so much for the kind comments! I'm especially glad you liked the directives thing -- that'll be central to the plot later on.

As for Clu's memories of the "real world", I think he does have some... but they're fragmented, and so alien that it's hard for him to make sense of them. He obviously remembered Alan's pager number, for example, but I think it probably took a long time for him to understand what a pager was. His actions in Legacy make it seem like he doesn't have much of a grasp on the outside world, even though he longs for it.

I always thought that it's weird in TL that way - no one can tell me that hyper-active Flynn did only WORK inside the Grid. He just must have told CLU of the outside world (which would clash with your FF, but I'm just saying)...

On the other hand, I think his drive to venture into the real world is more a natural development because CLUs Flynn's copy. The user wanted to reach "the next digital frontier" going inside the PC. It's seems only logical that CLU wants to do the same, just that for him, its our world he wants to reach...

PS: Sorry to bother you, but I'm just learning how to fiddle with GIMP and seeing your banner... How do you cut out those...uh... stripes (?) in CLU...?

I like the idea from the Betrayal comics: Flynn did tell Clu about the outside world, but only in a haphazard and self-aggrandizing way, dropping little factoids here and there. Clu ended up with a very limited view of the world as a consequence. Alan's willingness to sit down and actually explain things seems rare and exciting to him ( ... )
