I remember how much I hated the thought of Gandalf going off and leaving poor Bilbo with all those Dwarves - and right at the edge of a dark, scary forest!

Yes, he doesn't seem at all bothered about deserting them. He is even a bit snarky to them, telling them they've kept him from other things and all that. He is almost unconcerned.

I do feel terrible for Bilbo in this part, poor hobbit. He so doesn't want Gandalf to leave. And it's a good thing they honored their promise to let the ponies go, with that shambling bear about!

Thanks, GW! I enjoyed this so much!!

It was fun and I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you encouraged us all to do this for reading day. Thank you for that.

Gandalf more or less just leaves them on their own to sort it all out. While I think he is slightly sarcastic here, what he does, winds up helping Bilbo to prove himself to the dwarves.

Great reading. I was so sad that Gandalf left them, and that they had to give up the ponies too!

Thank you. I like this portion of the book because really, this is the last time that Bilbo is so unsure of himself. Once the journey through Mirkwood begins, Bilbo really comes into his own. I like his innocence here.

Gandalf is always wandering off! Silly wizard.

Thanks for reading to us. :)

Yes, that Gandalf has a way of leaving just when a person needs him to stick around, doesn't he?

Thank you for listening.

I love the way you read this part!

Gandalf is always being so mysterious! He started that a long time ago, didn't he?

I kind of enjoy the snarky Gandalf. I like the exchange between Gandalf and Thorin over the ponies. I also think this is just the very moment before Bilbo becomes the brave hobbit he is meant to be. He's still unsure of himself. Gandalf sets them on the path and kind of shames them all into finishing what they started.

I'm very pleased that you enjoyed this. Thank you.
