I find that when I am learning a piano piece and I'm only concerned with getting the notes right, it helps me focus when my brain is occupied with something else. Last week I was mulling over failed friendships and I managed to memorize a page of a piece I was working on in less than an hour. in high school, with the migraines, i once picked up knitting in order to relax and be productive. I ended up clicking the needles in pace with my thoughts... so the scarves I made we grotesquely enormous: too wide and too long. The kind of thing you could wear to weigh you down when drowning in a river. And I wasn't very good. According to my mom, I dropped stitches like "a member of the bourgeoisie."

How about a brooding hobby with less room for crushing failure?

Weeding works too. I did that the summer of 2007. By the end of the day I would be exhausted and I worked out most of my neurotic thoughts before I went to sleep. I would fall asleep almost instantly instead of the usual hour or more of churning.
