God, how lovely. What wonderful options those schools provide. Me, my options involve continuing in next semester's homework and looking longingly at the Roberto Bolano by my side, and reading the Roberto Bolano.

May I inquire about yr program(s), focus?

I'm "molecular biology" and "genetics." My real interest in the biology scheme of things is the evolution of life histories and questions like: why do we age? how did aging evolve? why do some organisms live for just a moment while others seem immortal (pine trees, tortoises).

Which Bolano? What have you read by him? I received "2666" for new years but I'm thinking of reading an earlier work of his first, like "The Savage Detectives."

I live 5 hours north of san franciso in Arcata. Berkeley is a nice place to live if you can afford it. I've been told that many of the full professors there have to commute from other places in the bay area.

this is true of princeton and brown, too. most professors can't afford expensive college towns. i'm thinking maybe i'll live in a co-op... housing and food are much much cheaper that way. and the people come a shade more interesting.

co-ops are the way to go. and if you look early, roomshares in berkeley aren't bad either.

roomshares meaning big houses that rent by room, shared bathrooms/kitchens
