I was surprised how fun Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was. I didn't think Burton had it in him anymore. I think the reason that it works is that it understands that Beetlejuice and the other underworld characters are terrific fun in small doses. Keaton is only in it for a fraction longer than he is in the original. Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci are in it exactly long enough for their gags to stay funny and fresh. The serial killer ghost kid is in exactly enough of the movie that you're getting just the right amount of tired of him when the very sudden punchline for his character arrives. The problem with a lot of the (many many) bad Burton project over the last 25 years is that things like that are overextended and lose the charm.
