Wow. That's really upsetting. I think i like my work environment better. To paraphrase: "So, uh. How honest should i be next time a kid asks me about my boyfriend?" "If they ask, tell them the truth. You shouldn't have to lie to them." "You do realize that some parents will pull their kids out of the program if they realize they're hanging out with godless homosexuals?" (This in chorus) "If they don't like it, they can stay home!"
it's not a global problem. as you know, all the teachers at smith knew that i'm queer, knew about you, didn't really care, with one possible exception. not everyone at dunbar knew, so i don't know how they would have reacted. and everyone else in the workshop wanted to be there, either for reasons of self-reinforcement or, as one participant said, "because i know the issue will come up, and i know that i have no idea how to deal with it sensitively."
