Did the gondoliers at least sing, or were you entirely robbed of movie-cliche Venice? ;)

Yes! The gondoliers did indeed sing, but only when paid extra. The base price for a gondolier ride is 70 euros for 50 minutes; additional increments of 20 minutes can be had for about 30 euros each. Singing incurs a fee negotiated between gondolier and passengers. The price is per gondola and not passenger, and since a gondola can seat six frugal travelers can defray costs by sharing a ride (but only 2 passengers can lounge on on the comfy rear cushions).

We split the ride four ways when we were there and passed on the singing. It was warmer, as we were there about a month later, and the ride was really very lovely and relaxing. You have to kiss (if you're a couple) when you go under bridges. There were a lot of bridges!! ;0
