Self-sufficiency is the biggest lie we tell ourselves.

Now, I'm all for being as self-sufficient as it is possible for a human to be, but we aren't fully self-sufficient organisms. For one; humans have the longest babyhood on the planet. I'm not speaking of life length, but of the shear overwhelming number of years in which we are incapable of feeding, moving or cleaning ourselves. No other species on the planet is as dependent on its parents as we are.

Then let's talk about the things we need to know. We do this one to ourselves, but the shear volume of human knowledge is staggering. I consider myself a fairly well educated human - I can repair my own computer, change my own oil, make my own butter... I'm a fair shot with a pistol, and not afraid of spinning and weaving (not that I wouldn't rather go to LLBean and let them outfit me... but you get the point.) The point is, given my tools, I'm not going to either starve or go hungry...

Given my tools.

I'm not capable of making my tools from scratch. I pay for other people to make my tools and comforts. People who are specialized, people who mine and smelt, who sow and reap, who weave and spin... or machines. Whatever.

My kitchen is a marvel of other people's labor: I like bananas. I live in an area where bananas DO NOT GROW. Heck, let's not even bring up my spice cabinet.

I'm pretty capable. But there isn't time for me to go and get or do all the things that go into even a fraction of the things I consume or interact with on a daily basis. I'm completely dependent on my species to do a lot for me.

And in return? I tell them how to get their retinal scanning devices to work. Let's not get into how many people it has taken for that little gem to come around. But I love living in a world where we have things like Retinal Scanning devices and Glucose meters and pre-cut bacon.

You show me a wholly self-sufficient person, and I'll show you someone who either can't see the big picture or is delusional. They can choose their label; they're still wrong.

And I don't like to let wrong-people make decisions about my life. It's against my religion.
