Read something by Nicholson Baker. Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. The Count of Monte Cristo. The Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events (you won't regret it.) Anything ELSE by Saramago. Brave New World. Brothers Karamazov. I'll let you know if I think of more.

The Difference Engine (Gibson & Bruce Sterling)
Vindication Of The Rights Of Women (Mary Wollstonecraft; yay OLD school feminism :) )
Webmage (Kelly McCullough; fun cyberpunk/fantasy smashup)
A Tale Of Two Cities (Dickens)
Anansi Boys (Neil Gaiman)
Good Omens (Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett)
First & Second Treatise On Government (John Locke)
A few ideas anyway. Also I'll second the Heinlein, Brave New World, and add anything Orwell to that list too.
