My deep secret, revealed in the dark...

This is probably my all-time favorite Broadway-style stage production, rivaled only by Evita (which I got to see on Broadway, but missed the original cast, with Mandy Patinkin [aka Inigo Montoya, as well as Gideon on Criminal Minds] in the role of Che; love that soundtrack!) and Dreamgirls (the original cast of which I did see on Broadway, and watched Jennifer Holiday bring down the house with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going").

Yes, I am the second-straightest man I know (tied with a certain other gent, now that his heterosexuality is no longer Visible From Space), and I love show tunes. Deal.

Worse, though: Certain show tunes make me cry. (Okay, maybe third-straightest.) I can't help it. "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" from Evita does it to me every time - except when Madonna sang it in the movie. (That was wrong, dammit! That song didn't belong to Evita, it was meant to be sung by Peron's 16-year-old mistress, and in the stage production, it is heart-rending and show-stealing.)

So tonight, Herself and I went to see Snow White and the Huntsman. (Micro-review: Not a classic, but fun. Some distracting but largely forgiveable implausibilities. [No, I'm not talking about the magic stuff; most of that I rather enjoyed.] Stewart wasn't as bad as many [myself included] feared, and the production as a whole was good. Hemsworth continues to solidify his position as an action-adventure heart-throb. [It's possible I'm still hearing Thor in my head, but in this film he seemed to be using an occasionally somewhat Scottish version of Russell Crowe's accent from Gladiator, which Mr. Crowe described as "the Royal Shakespearean Company two pints after lunch".] Theron did a great job as the villainous queen, clearly relishing the role but refraining from going over the top and chewing scenery. Unfortunate/unnecessary choice to cast big actors [though, granted, excellent ones] as dwarves. There are plenty of talented little people out there, as we've seen in both Game of Thrones and this year's other Snow White flick, Mirror, Mirror, among other examples.)

Anyway, to get back to the point of this post/confession: So, we're enjoying the trailers that precede the film, a new one begins to roll, and suddenly I'm hit with the opening strains of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Mis. Caught completely off-guard, I was almost instantly reduced to tears - which might have been kind of embarrassing, were the lights not already down. Only Herself saw, and was kind enough to hand me a napkin.

So there you have it, my dark secret revealed.

And BTW, who knew Ann Hathaway could sing?
